The Sphinx in Dragon's Dogma 2 is one of the most interesting entities in the game, and not just due to its unique appearance. The Sphinx offers up to ten riddles, each providing a unique reward. The Sphinx appears in two locations, and the answers to the riddles may vary from player to player.

These riddles award puzzles ranging from Wakestones to Portcrystals to Gold, so they're worth doing. Like the ringing phone riddles in Lies of P, they reward you with unique items and various currencies. The Sphinx's riddles are not just thought exercises; some require a particular companion, while others ask where you picked up your first Seeker's Token. Each riddle asks players to stretch their thinking to find its solution.

Do Dragon's Dogma 2 Pawns Keep The Items You Give Them?

Players can share items with their Pawns in Dragon’s Dogma 2, but what happens if their pawns are dismissed or die? Here’s how Pawn inventories work.

Every Sphinx Riddle Solution

Dragon’s Dogma 2: All Sphinx Riddles Solutions (2)

You can only try to answer each riddle once. If you answer incorrectly, you will be locked out of the trophy you receive if you answer all ten correctly, and you will need to start a new playthrough to earn it.

On the PlayStation 5, you can avoid this by turning off the PS+ Cloud Save and the auto sync. This allows you to re-download the autosave from the cloud if you get it wrong and try again. You can also make an Inn Rest save by sleeping at an Inn and then reloading from there.

The Sphinx appears in two locations in Dragon's Dogma 2, the first in the Mountain Shrine in Vermond. Head northeast from Checkpoint Rest Town, passing through the destroyed fortress, past the troll miniboss, and into Worldsend Cave. At the end of the path, you will find the Mountain Shrine and the Sphinx.

Riddle 1 - Riddle of Eyes

Riddle

Solution

Reward

“Our eyes are our allies, yet oft they betray, for eyes tell lies, so I advise, and thence do lead astray. Yet how will your eyes advise you? Venture through yonder door, and retrieve that which is of greatest value.”

Bring the "Sealing Phial" to the Sphinx

Wakestone

The solution here is simple: head downstairs and look upright as you pass through the door. A chest rests above the door frame, and heading to the right allows you to walk up to it and take what's inside. You will want the "Sealing Phial" from inside, but don't use it. It is a single-use item that will disappear when used, so wait and give it to the Sphinx before using it.

The Sealing Phial is an item that allows you to seal one NP (not pawns) inside. You can use this however you like, and once the NPC is released, the Phial will break. However, it can be helpful in the next riddle.

Riddle 2 - Riddle of Madness

Riddle

Solution

Reward

“Love is as twin to madness, they say. They are bound fast, as night is to day. So bring forth your most beloved to me that I might gauge the depth of your insanity.”

Bring a companion with high affinity.

Portcrystal

This riddle asks you to bring "your most beloved," so place a Portcrystal here and bring back a companion with high affinity. If you need to determine whether your companions like you enough, one way to know if you've maxed your affinity is to look at their cheeks when you talk with them. If they glow red, their affinity is maxed in DD2.

How To Unlock The True Ending In Dragon’s Dogma 2

Dragon’s Dogma 2 contains multiple endings. The final boss is too powerful to face in a fair fight. Instead, stop things before the encounter happens.

If you'd like to be on the safe side, you can wait until later in the game to complete this riddle. The character you bring does not have to be the character you are romancing, although if they are the character with whom you have the highest affinity, they are the solution.

Controversially, Portcrystals can be purchased on Steam and are listed as Dragon's Dogma 2 DLC. If you don't have any, this can be a quick and easy way to get more without searching.

Once you've picked the character you would like to bring, either place them into the Sealing Phial or begin to escort them back to the Sphinx. The simplest way to do this is to pick the character up and then warp back to the Portcrystal you placed earlier using a Ferrystone. Finally, present your beloved to the Sphinx and be rewarded.

Riddle 3 - Riddle of Wisdom

Riddle

Solution

Reward

“The parent knows the child, yet the reverse is far from true. The child knows not the parent: such is the parent’s due. I am a lost child; for kinship do I yearn. So bring to me my “Parent”, that I might better learn.”

Bring a "SphinxParent," "SphinxFather," or "SphinxMother" pawn to the Sphinx.

1200 Rift Currency

The Riddle of Wisdom is a bit cheeky and asks you to bring the Sphinx's "parent" to it. There is no profound lore hiding the secret of the Sphinx's conception. Instead, get one of the above pawns, which always spawn at the Riftstone of Fellowship northeast of Checkpoint Rest Town and the Riftstone in Harve village.

You must have "Network Features" set to "off" in settings to avoid seeing pawns of other mulitplayer players in Dragon's Dogma 2. After summoning one of these pawns, place it on the platform before the Sphinx and talk to it to solve the riddle.

Riddle 4 - Riddle of Conviction

Riddle

Solution

Reward

“Life is an enigma—a lender of mortal debt. Yet a lighter pack makes fleeter foot and challenges nimbly met. So grant to me what you most prize, and thence elude your ponderous demise.”

Bring any item.

Another of that same item

The Riddle of Conviction asks you to provide the Sphinx with the item you prize the most under threat of "ponderous demise." However, the Sphinx is pulling a fast one on you. When you present your item, it will actually be duplicated. To solve this riddle, provide the Sphinx with any item you want another of.

Riddle 5 - Riddle of Rumination

Riddle

Solution

Reward

“It’s ever the first we keep fond in our breast, and ever the first that eclipses the rest. You know of the Seeker’s Tokens, I trust? Those keepsakes of a fondly remembered journey? Yet where was it that you found your first? Retrace your steps, if you can – you might make a new discovery. Seven days, shall we say, ere you return? May your journey be a pleasant one.”

Bring the Finder's Token

Ferrystone x3

For this riddle, the Sphinx asks you to return to the location of the first Seeker's Token you picked up. Unfortunately, DD2 does not record where you picked up each one, so you need to remember where it was. Otherwise, you will need to revisit the site of each Seeker's Token you've found.

Dragonsplague, a deadly disease that spreads between pawns, is one of Dragon's Dogma 2's most punishing mechanics - but there are ways to avoid it.

Once you arrive there, you will see what appears to be another Seeker's Token in that place, but when you pick it up, you'll see it's actually a Finder's Token. Bring this back to the Sphinx and turn it in. This will complete the riddle and allow you to collect your next reward.

If you can't find the Finder's Token, do not worry because the Seeker's Token pickups will reset on a New Game+ playthrough. On your playthrough, note the location of the first one you find so you can return to it later and complete this riddle.

How To Solve The Final Five Riddles

Dragon’s Dogma 2: All Sphinx Riddles Solutions (5)

After the first five riddles, the Sphinx changes location. If you're fast and brave enough, you can actually jump on the Sphinx's back before it flies away, negating the need to find it again. If you can't catch it in time, head towards the Frontier Shrine by following the river under the Checkpoint Rest Town as it heads west.

The next five riddles might be in a random order. There's nothing amiss if you are given the riddles in another order, so follow them as they're given.

Riddle 6 - Riddle of Reunion

Riddle

Solution

Reward

Find the Sphinx again

Find the Sphinx at the Frontier Shrine.

100k Gold

This riddle is simple; once you find the Sphinx, it will be considered completed. This riddle was just to reunite with the Sphinx. Upon your arrival at the Frontier Shrine, a chest to the left will already be open; open it for your reward.

Riddle 7 - Riddle of Recollection

Riddle

Solution

Reward

“Now, questions beget questions, and I have one for you. How many riddles have you solved thus far? My memory fails me, you see. Remind me, and make it plain. Let yonder statues be your means. For every question aptly answered, bring one here before me.”

Bring the number of statues equal to your number of correctly solved riddles.

Unmaking Arrow

Now, the Sphinx asks players to remember how many riddles they've solved correctly thus far. Pick up and bring to the Sphinx the number of stone statues equal to the number of riddles you've solved correctly in your playthrough. If this is your seventh riddle, but you've only solved five, bring only five statues to the Sphinx.

Again, the order of these riddles is randomized in DD2, so this may differ from your seventh riddle. Keep track of how many you have gotten right to ensure you bring the correct number of stone statues. You can see how many riddles you've gotten right by counting the number of Sphinx Reward Chests that have been opened.

Riddle 8 - Riddle of Contest

Riddle

Solution

Reward

“Though ours is a battle of wits, tests of mettle are more to your strength. Is that not so? Come, try your arm – though he shall be your opponent, not I. However, I am not one to be amused by a simple duel. Bear this ring into battle, that I might gauge your true strength.”

Defeat the enemy.

Ring of Ambition

This riddle is one of the most straightforward that the Sphinx will pose to you. She summons an enemy, and you must defeat it in battle. You can fight normally, or you can stagger the enemy, pick it up, and then push itoff the cliff for an easy win and the solution to this riddle.

Riddle 9 - Riddle of Futility

Riddle

Solution

Reward

“How easily the mind unravels! Some say it’s pain that does it best, others darkness – but I say neither. Rather, I say a mind cannot be more soundly broken than when it beholds its earnest efforts laid low in a single stroke. Could you survive such despair? We shall see. Here I have an amphora destine for Ser Maurits in Battahl. Deliver it to him, but beware; it’s rather fragile.”

Bring the Vase to the NPC in the Mural Byway

Eternal Bond (Ring)

Exactly as the riddle asks, you must deliver the vase to an NPC standing next to a Sphinx Mural in Bakbattahl, in a location called "Mural Byway." This vase is very fragile, so stroll and save often. If the vase breaks, you can hit "Return to Title Screen Without Saving" and reload at your last save as long as it doesn't autosave. If the vase does break, you are locked out of this and future riddles for this playthrough and must redo all the previous riddles in another.

If you want to cheese the riddle, you can use a Ferrystone to carry and teleport the NPC from the Mural Byway to the Sphinx. Then, carry it the few steps between where the vase sits and where you teleported in. The NPC will count this as you have delivered the vase, and you will complete the riddle.

Riddle 10 - Riddle of Differentiation

Riddle

Solution

Reward

“So vast is the world, and full of life; you are but one of many. Indeed, in the grand scheme, we are as distinct from one another as pebbles on a beach – yet we do so love to extol our differences. But are these differences so great? If you believe so, this next task should prove exceedingly simple. I seek this man. If men are so distinct, I’m sure you’ll find him in a trice.”

Bring the shown NPC to the Sphinx

Whimsical Daydream

After giving you this riddle, the Sphinx will show you an image of an NPC. Do pay careful attention to the NPC's hair and note the pattern and shape of the scar on his eye. This NPC is either Dante or Vergil; Dante and Vergil are two NPCs in Checkpoint Rest Town.

Dante has straight hair while Vergil's is curly, and each twin has a different scar on the eye to the player's left. Approach the character that the Sphinx showed you and carry them back to her to complete the riddle.

How To Beat The Sphinx

After answering the final riddle, the Sphinx will want to engage you in combat so that you can earn the final chest. As seen in Boss Fight Database's fight on YouTube, it isn't easy to beat the Sphinx.

The Sphinx fights using magic, projectiles thrown from her wings, and simple force attacks as she swoops down at players. Be prepared for her fire and ice attacks; after you withstand these, you will need to avoid the lightning waves that she summons and her teleportation.

The Sphinx has four health bars, and after chunking through them all, it will try to fly away. As it does, archers can shoot the Unmaking Arrow received earlier from the Riddle of Recollection toguarantee a one-hit kill. Upon death, the Sphinx will drop gold along with the Key of Sagacity, which opens the big chest. If you don't kill it before it flies off, you cannot pursue it further, so do your best to burst it down.

If you kill the Sphinx, collect your gold and key and loot the big chest. Inside, you will find an Eternal Wakestone, which can revive multiple people at once. After completing all the Sphinx's riddles in Dragon's Dogma 2, you might consider unlocking a new class, like the magical melee Mystic Spearhand class.
