Glossary of Forensic Document Examination & Pattern Recognition (2024)

A signature (from Latin signare, "to sign") is a handwritten (and often stylized) depiction of someone's name, nickname, or even a simple "X" that a person writes on documents as a proof of identity and intent. The writer of a signature is a signatory. Similar to a handwritten signature, a signature work describes the work as readily identifying its creator. A signature may be confused with an autograph, which is chiefly an artistic signature. This can lead to confusion when people have both an autograph and signature and as such some people in the public eye keep their signatures private whilst fully publishing their autograph. [1]

Type of signatures

Forgery
A legal term that not only involves a non-genuine signature or document, but also intent on the part of its maker to defraud. Outside of the courtroom, however, it is used synonymously with fraudulent signature or spurious document. The document examiner confines the use of the term to any signature or holographic document written by someone other than the person himself.
Fraudulent Signature
A forged signature. It involves the writing of a name as a signature by someone other than the person identified by the signature, without his or her permission, and often with some degree of imitation.
Freehand Imitation
A forgery, a fraudulent signature that was executed purely by simulation rather than by tracing the outline of a genuine signature.
Guided Signature
A signature that is executed while the writer's hand or arm is steadied in any fashion; also classified as an assisted signature. Under the law of most jurisdictions such a signature authenticates a legal document provided that is shown that the writer requested the assistance. Guided signatures are most commonly written during serious illness or recovery from an injury. Guided signature may also be referred to as an assisted signature.
Imitated Signature
Synonymous with Freehand Forgery.
Model Signature
A genuine signature that has been used to prepare an imitated or traced forgery.
Spurious Signature
A fraudulent signature in which there is no apparent attempt at simulation or imitation. It is a common form of forgery encountered in the investigation of fraudulent checks where the person passing the check depends on the surrounding circ*mstances rather than upon the quality of the signature for his success.
Traced Forgery
Any fraudulent signature executed by actually following the outline of a genuine signature with the writing instrument. Such a signature may be produced with the aid of carbon paper by first tracing the carbon outline and then covering this with a suitable ink stroke, or the forgery may be traced from an outline made visible by light coming through the model signature and the fraudulent document.
