SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 314

Commending Thomas M. Little.

WHEREAS, Thomas M. Little, a labor leader for the International Longshoremen’s Association AFL-CIO, serves the Commonwealth as the international vice president of the Port of Hampton Roads, representing over 1,800 dock workers; and

WHEREAS, a longtime resident of Norfolk, Thomas Little graduated from Booker T. Washington High School; he developed a passion for labor leadership and graduated from the Southeastern Virginia AFL-CIO Leadership School and completed AFL-CIO political training; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Little has served in various elected positions for the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) Local 1248, including as a member of the executive board, a business agent, and a convention, wage scale committee, and Hampton Roads District Council delegate; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Little has been a member of ILA Local 1248 for 45 years and has served as president since 2000; he is the acting president for ILA Local 1963, executive officer for the Virginia AFL-CIO, vice president for the Eastern Virginia Labor Federation, cochair of the HRSA-ILA Board of Trustees, cochair of the HRSA-ILA Contract Board, and president of the ILA Hampton Roads District Council; and

WHEREAS, as international vice president of the Port of Hampton Roads, Thomas Little was appointed to serve on grievance committees in Charleston, New Orleans, and Jacksonville; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Little has received numerous awards and accolades for his work to serve and support the community, including the Paul A. Askew Community Services Memorial Award, United Way Leadership Award, Implement the King Dream Award, and a certificate from the Diabetes Center Foundation; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Little and his wife, Glenda, are proud parents and grandparents and enjoy fellowship and worship with the community at New Calvary Baptist Church, where he served on the board of trustees; and

WHEREAS, emphasizing the importance of unity, Thomas Little challenges his longshoremen to “control your own destiny or someone else will, because a dream you dream alone is only a dream, but a dream you dream together is reality”; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Thomas M. Little for his devoted service to the Hampton Roads community and the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Thomas M. Little as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his leadership and dedication to the Commonwealth’s maritime workers.
