Introduction : What does Best mean in this context
The goal of this article to present you the 4 best vocations in Dragon's Dogma.
What does this mean?
You'll find the most adaptable classes on this list, their main quirks and how to use them to form a synergic team.
I recommend to replay the game at least once with each vocation presented here.
Dragon's Dogma has a high replayability due to these vocations and notably because of the personal affinity you'll develop with them.
I also recommend to try solo play to experiences the strengths of each class.
Hybrid classes are better in Dragon's Dogma. Said in another way, they are more versatile or more powerful than simple classes.
This is list only contains 1 simple class in this list, the sorcerer, which is also the class with the highest damage potential.
Here are the 4 vocations I'd recommend for your playthrough :
Mystic Knight
Offense - magic/physical
The Mystic Knight has a decent offense, but is the weakest attacker on the list.
You can make use of it as a pillar for your group.
If you like to play management roles, this is the vocation you'll pick.
Its main elements are Dark and Fire.
Defense - magic/physical
The Mystic Knight, alongside the Warrior, have the highest base defense and defensive potential.
The added advantage of the Mystic Knight is that it can bolster its team defenses.
Speed & Endurance
The Mystic Knight is the most enduring class on the list.
Versatility - support/tools
Mystic Knight is the most balanced vocation on this list, allowing you to ensure offensive and defensive positions.
Which means that you can compose more diverse pawn teams with a Mystic Knight arisen.
Make use of Infused weapons to create more synergy.
As a general note, Mystic Knight, Assassin and Magic Archer characters should consider weapons inflicting alterations like silence, torpor or lowered defense/offense.

Assassin
Offense - magic/physical
Probably the highest Damage per Second on this list.
Not the highest damage level per se.
Assassins tend to exploit bosses weaknesses through their skills and access to many infused and debilitating weapons.
Note that the Assassin is probably the best class when it comes to solo runs or speedruns.
It may be preferable to play the Assassin in Solo above level 100 as most players will be able to exploit some of its skills to trivialize boss fights.
Defense - magic/physical
The Assassin has a decent physical/magical resistance.
It also possesses a specific skill you can use to make yourself very difficult to kill.
Speed & Endurance
The Assassin is the most resilient vocation on the list.
It balances strength, speed, endurance and agility for an overall easier management of difficult situations.
If you prefer to play physical classes or have an aggressive gameplay, this is the vocation you'll use all game long.
Finally, it's useful to be an assassin if you want to avoid fights.
Versatility - support/tools
This is the most Versatile vocation when it comes to weapons, yet it has no access to spells.
It can be compensated by making use of infused weapons.
The Assassin is not meant as a support class.
However, unlike the sorcerer, it does not require support and you can play it without pawns.
Recommended Pawns :
Magick Archer
Offense - magic/physical
Magick Archer have access to most weapons and therefore to most elemental damages and debilitations.
They can inflict the 2nd highest damage, placing them below the Sorcerer but above the Assassin.
Note that the Sorcerer is slower but does significantly more damage, whilst the Assassin is fast and therefore can inflict much more damage.
It has access to all elements, but the most prevalent one is Holy.
Defense - magic/physical
Magick Archers can boost, cure and protect whilst being physically and magically resilient.
If you're not sure of your positioning in fights, this is a highly reliable class as you can both take damages and reposition yourself fast.
Speed & Endurance
Magick Archers are slightly slower and less agile than assassins.
Versatility - support/tools
Magic Archers are the most versatile class on the list.
They have access of to most weapons and spells types/elemental abilities.
They can be played in solo due to their high offensive potential.
They can also be played in team due to their access to many support skills.
Overall the best vocation of the game.
Recommended Pawns :
Sorcerer
Offense - magic/physical
The most powerful class of the game.
They do not have access to physical damages, other than remnant damages from advanced spells.
Sorcerers spells are slow even when equipped with the proper skills and the Wyrmking's Ring.
Therefore, you'll need some space to cast them.
Sorcerers have access to all elemental damages and all forms of major debilitations.
Defense - magic/physical
Sorcerer have the highest magical defense.
Though, do not count on defense with this class, it was built for offense.
Speed & Endurance
The Sorcerer is the weakest class on this list when it comes to physical damages.
Versatility - support/tools
Sorcerers are not a support class.
They are a class which needs support.
Strangely, sorcerers possess a healing spell curing petrification alongside other downgrades.
For new players, I recommend having at least 1 mage and 1 physical ally amongst your pawns.

Conclusion : Try them all
I'd recommend to try each vocation to optimize your playthrough.
It is not difficult to upgrade all 4 with the same character, especially if you restart the game once for each.
The arenas in Bitterblack Isle can help you to upgrade your vocation fast.
None of these classes seem to perform ideally on its own.
The main reason being that bosses have elementary weaknesses and exploit environmental features.
The sorcerer is the only vocation which can cover them all elements while also being the weakest when it comes to physical damages.
Note that these recommendations are for an optimal experience in Bitterblack Isle.
The main game is much more forgiving and you can play it with any class.
