Why investing in human hair for braids is worth it - Spell Magazine (2024)

Human hair braids (HHB) are really having their moment. The beach babe style has become this summer’s superstar braid, and like with any trend, the question is… Do we jump on the bandwagon? The short answer is, yesssssssssssss!

Take a seat, synthetic hair

Compared to synthetic braids which have a thicker fibre, HHB are finer and therefore have less density making it lighter to wear. The finish looks insanely natural too being a hybrid of classic box braids and weave creating a whimsical textured look. From what we’ve seen so far, it’s perfect for Goddess braids and the ‘It Girl’ hairstyle of the Nineties – pick n’ drop.

The spike in HHB has been meteoric. 350 million TikTok users have keyed in the hashtag Goddess human hair braids. Celebrities are getting in on the act too. Janet Jackson wore her pick n’ drop in a space bun ponytail and Spell Magazine cover beau Vick Hope visited the UK’s top celebrity braid stylist Molecia Sessay aka @momoshair for her mermaid wave instalment. Influencers are not holding back too by experimenting with different lengths, colours and statement partings, making the style more covetable.

All the benefits of using human hair

The fiber innovation in synthetic hair has come a long way and while there are many reasons why some might go for this option here are few reasons why you should consider using human hair for your next braided hair style.

Say goodbye to tangled and matted looking hair

Kankalon fibers do not last as long as human hair. Quality human hair will not matt or tangle which means you can enjoy the style for longer.

It’s an investment

Top grade human hair is not cheap so think of this as an investment. With proper care and maintenance, the hair is reusable.

Style options are endless

The best thing about wearing human hair, you can style it as if it were your own hair. This is also the case when its braided. Fancy some highlights or some balayage? You can custom colour the hair before installation to have stunning effect that’s unique to you.

Lightweight meaning less tension on your scalp

The lightness of the hair means less tension on the scalp and delicate areas like the hairline and edges. Human hair is lighter than synthetic hair because it is void of plastic fibers, so the style won’t feel as heavy.

Natural looking

If having a more natural look is important to you then opting for human hair will be a great option for you.

No more chemicals

Unlike some synthetic hairs, human hair does not require chemicals in the manufacturing process. These chemicals can cause an allergic reaction. Even though raw virgin human hair has not been chemically processed, it is always worth washing the hair with an apple cider rinse before installing.

Ask the expert: Human hair braids

Celebrity braid stylist Molecia Sessay aka Momo’s Hair is ruling the human hair braid scene. She shares her tips on how to get the look.

Why do you think using human hair for braiding has become popular?

My clients love how it looks sooooo natural. The lightness of HHB is unmatched and this is what makes it popular. I would describe it as a delicate wispiness when it falls down, and the movement is much softer compared to synthetic hair. It is an investment style and what you get is quality hair that lasts longer, is easy to maintain and reusable.

What’s your favourite thing about using human hair when braiding?

The installation is easier. I use the knotless braid technique to give it a sleek, natural look. It blends so smoothly with your own hair that it looks like the braid is sprouting from your scalp and you’re growing braids!

What are your tips for using human hair to braid?

Buy human hair that does not shed. Hair that sheds will require more packs of hair and therefore be more expensive. If you’re using weft hair, make sure you cut as close as possible to the weft and use a gel or leave-in conditioner to help separate the strands. This makes it a lot easier for you to pick human hair up and braid into your hair.

The best human hair for braiding

Human hair can be bought wefted or in bulk. Bulk hair is recommended for braiding as the pre-cut hair is less susceptible to shedding. Weft are more suitable for sew-in application.

There are two types of human hair – Indian Remi and yaki. It is down to preference and the desired result for which one you choose. Remi hair is considered the best grade for quality. It’s sourced from a single (human) donor which means the cuticles are aligned in one direction. The result is a natural look, soft to the touch without tangles, matting or snags.

Alternatively, yaki is sourced from different donors and has a less silky appearance. It mimics relaxed or natural blow-dried hair and has become increasingly popular.

If you want the best of both worlds, you can go go for human hair blend which is a mix of 100% human hair with premium synthetic fibres.
